Antibiotic Allergies
In this session about antibiotic allergies we will discuss five clinical scenarios in which a patient has a reported allergy to the first line antibiotic. In all cases there is a conservative and progressive antibiotic option. A conservative approach means selecting an antibiotic with a theoretical lower risk of causing an allergic reaction, but may be either more toxic or less effective. A progressive approach means using an antibiotic which may challenge current practice habits.

The Appropriate Use of Sedation During Paralysis
Therapeutic paralysis is often indicated in patients undergoing rapid sequence intubation, for various operative procedures, or in those requiring assistance for mechanical ventilation compliance. However, awake paralysis is historically known to be a detrimental experience for patients and should be avoided. The 2016 Society of Critical Care Medicine Clinical Practice Guideline for Sustained Neuromuscular Blockade in the Adult Critically Ill Patient provides numerous recommendations to ensure patients do not recall these experiences, but little is known on the literature behind these recommendations. Additionally, discussions regarding potential institutional measures to prevent awake paralysis can increase awareness of patients at risk of awake paralysis and can increase patient safety.
